Jyotiṣa (Tamil: சோதிடம்) comes from Sanskrit: Jyoti = light, Isha = lord or master. Literally, "the lord of light" or "the science of light." It is one of the six Vedangas — the six limbs of the Vedas — making it among the oldest formal sciences in human history, dating to at least 1500 BCE.

The Ecliptic and the Zodiac

The ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun through the star background over one year, as seen from Earth. Since all planets orbit the Sun in roughly the same flat plane (the solar disc), they all appear to move along this same narrow band. Ancient astronomers divided this 360° band into 12 equal segments of 30° each — the twelve Rashis (zodiac signs).

The nine Vedic planets (Grahas): Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's orbital intersection points with the ecliptic — not physical bodies.

Graha (Sanskrit: ग्रह) means "that which grasps." The nine Grahas are cosmic forces that grasp or influence different aspects of human existence. Note: Sun and Moon are luminaries (not planets astronomically), and Rahu/Ketu are mathematical points — yet all nine are called Grahas in Jyotisha.

Paarvai (Tamil: பார்வை = gaze/sight / Sanskrit: Drishti) is the power every planet has to influence houses beyond its own. Think of it as a planet's "line of sight" — it doesn't just affect the house it sits in, it also "looks at" specific other houses and energises them.

A chart promise not supported by Dasa timing will not manifest. A good Dasa cannot overcome an absent chart promise. Both must agree.

How to Identify a Yoga

A yoga requires three verifications: (1) the planets involved must be in the correct positional relationship, (2) the lords must be strong enough to deliver results, and (3) the yoga must be activated by Dasha or transit. A yoga that is never activated remains dormant — potential unrealised.

The 7 Golden Rules of Chart Reading

The Lagna lord is always the most important planet — its strength determines overall life quality.
A planet in own sign, exalted, or aspected by Jupiter is strong; debilitated, combust, or in enemy's sign = weak.
Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 (Kendra) and 1, 5, 9 (Trikona) are the most powerful positions for benefics.
The house lord's placement is as important as what's inside the house itself.
Chart potential + Dasa timing + Transit trigger = actual event. All three must agree.

The Rasi chart (D1) shows what a planet promises. The Navamsa (D9) shows how fully that promise will manifest. A planet that is strong in D1 but weak in D9 gives incomplete results. A planet weak in D1 but exalted in D9 rises over time — its potential is delayed but ultimately fulfilled.

Why it matters for transits: Jupiter transiting your 10th house gives good career results — in general. But Ashtakavarga tells you how good. If your 10th house has 38 Ashtakavarga points (out of 56), Jupiter's transit there will be exceptional. If it has only 18 points, the same transit gives ordinary results. Two people with Jupiter in the same transit house experience completely different outcomes.

Shadbala (Sanskrit: षड्बल = "six strengths") is the most rigorous system of planetary strength measurement in Vedic astrology. Six different types of strength are calculated for each planet, expressed in numerical units called Rupas. The total tells you exactly how capable each planet is of delivering its promised results.

Think of it as a planet's engine power. A planet may be in a great house (H1, H10) but if its Shadbala is low, it lacks the fuel to deliver. Conversely, a planet in a seemingly difficult house but with high Shadbala still produces notable results.

Shadbala and Dasha interpretation: When a planet's Mahadasha begins, check its Shadbala first. A planet running its Dasha with high Shadbala (well above minimum) will reliably deliver its promises in that period. A planet with low Shadbala in Dasha requires more patience and conscious effort — its gifts come slowly or with struggle.
